All right. So I'd read all the stuff before about how much better FFVII is on Playstation than it is on PC, but up until now I've only played on PC. Today I finally played it for the first time on Playstation. I have to say, for the most part, it's right! The sound is way better, it looks cooler and the FMVs are a lot neater too. I immediately changed the settings to have X for entry and O for cancel because after having it that way for FFIX and FFX and then it being the opposite for FFVII, well, that's just weird and I don't think I could get used to it. Other than that, there's couple of things that I'm not liking:

- It would seem that there's no way to use the Analog stick. I really like using this to move around instead of the D-Pad. Is there any way to use this? (I'm getting the feeling the answer is no.)

- When I use Tifa's limit breaks, the slots just run through like whoooooosh! It goes lightning fast and there's really no way to time it at all. Is there any way to slow it down? I'm worried that when I get to the battle arena at the Gold Saucer, it's going to spin like crazy like that as well and I won't be able to time the slots on that, which basically would make the battle arena impossible.

Edited to add: I'm playing it on a Playstation 2 and not an original Playstation.

I only played the Pc version, but I never had any problems with the controls or the slots for that matter. It just takes something to get used to.
Although, like said before the I only have the Pc version I do agree with you in regards of music. The music of the playstation versions sounds better and the FMV's run somewhat smoother, but in game graphics don't differ much from what I have seen. Maybe the Pc version has got a little bit adventage there since it is faster then a PSX

Yeah, I agree, on the PC version they run at a speed where with a little practice you can stop them. But on the Playstation version and I don't know if this is a compatibility issue with playing it on Playstation 2 vs. Playstation or what, they run by like lightning. I mean, seriously, you'd have to have the speed of a computer in order to be able to have any precision over where it stops.

I'm pretty sure that ff7 came out before the dual analog controller for playstation which means you'll just have to use the d-pad. As for the slots thing I never tried looking at them, rather I'd use a count, just count to yourself one-two-three, hit the button on three, or try different counts like a 5 or 7 second count, its been so long since I played the game I don't remember which one worked best.

Ah, I see. All right, I'll live with the d-pad then. I'm already getting used to it.

Okay, I'll try that. On the PC version I was always able to look at them and time them, but these just zip by way too first. The count thing sounds like a good idea.

One other thing I've noticed is some dialogue differences. The gist of the message is still the same, but the words will be different. For example, in the PC version, if you put Barret and Red XIII in your party when exiting to the World Map for the first time, then Aeris and Tifa will say: "Interesting. Combination. Well, have fun... boys. We'll see you at Kalm." Whereas with the Playstation version, they'll say "Unusual. Combination." and then something else. At least in my version. I'm not sure whether I have "greatest hits" or the original version. The Playstation version also includes the "Touph Ring" error, whereas in the PC version it's spelled "Tough Ring." I wouldn't be surprised if the infamous "Off Course" error is present in the Playstation version too. It isn't in the PC version.

ive noticed some stuff with the playstation game that are different than in the PC.
ive noticed that the dialogue is different in some places, but i dont know exactly what they are.
but i havent seen a difference in the slots... i think its the playstation 2 issue...
but i like the pc better... in some ways....
first, you can have as many save places... you just need to find out how to change file names and create folders.... :P
second, the computer is faster so the fmv play faster... tho i havent noticed a res difference....
and i also like the playstation version too for a couple of reasons....
first, the controls... i got the pc controls confused and the game never said anything about the controls since they gave you the option to change them... but i still think they couldve done better and stuff.....
second.... you dont get ims while youre playing... :P

Yeah, me too. I know the game so well that I could probably point most of them out if asked too. But I won't here.

Okay. Yeah, it's probably because it's so fast that it doesn't know to slow it down. The flashing colors that show up when the characters have a limit break also flash way faster than they should.

Yeah, I liked having a lot of save places and being able to send savefiles and download them online as well.

Hmm, I haven't noticed any slowness problems. Maybe it's the Playstation 2 again, it's able to keep up.

Hmm. I thought the controls were in both the tutorials and the manual.

:) Not a problem for me, I usually wasn't online when I played it on PC.

Pepper the square button - hmm, okay. I'll try that, see if it slows it down.

Edited to Add: One thing I'm noticing on the dialogue on the Playstation version - a lot more of Cid's profanity is cesnored in the PC version than it is in the Playstation version. For example, when Cid aborts the rocket launch in the PC version, he says "SH-------#%!!" but in the Playstation version it reads "SH-------IT!!"

I'm the complete opposite... When I was playing Final Fantasy VII, I stuck with these controls, and I had to alter them on VIII and IX so that they were similar. Alas, Final Fantasy X didn't have this option. Nor the older games. So I'll probably get confused like you with the setting on the game as it is.

A game the size of Final Fantasy VII COULD have a few errors in text during speech. There's meant to be quality control and stuff, but sometimes things do slip through before publication. The PC version was released later than the Playstation version, so there may have been for Square to alter the little bugs people reported on the PS version. That, and if I remember correctly, the PC and PS games were published by different companies, so there may have been areas in the story where one company dis-liked language used or something.

As for the slots thing. I always use "Ok" instead of "Yeah" and can get all seven slots stopped in place. Causes as much damage most of the time anyway...

Well, really I think that stuff like the controls doesn't have anything to do with with which one is better...

But I am not sure which one I really like, here are a few differeces on each:

PSX: Everything looks much much better, it's not as blurry as the PC version, plus the sound is clearer since it's WAV, not MIDI like the PC, plus they actually SING during One Winged Angel in the PSX version, unlike the PC...

PC: Crappy graphics... Crappy sound... Freezes occasionally... You need to download patches to work with certain computers... BUT, it has 2 plus sides that I LOVE, you can hack it to edit your characters lol, just for fun ^_^, and you won't need to buy a GS... PLUS, there is a patch you can download (a SMALL patch) that turns Sephiroth into the main character (doesn't chagne the movies though, obviously...), and Cloud then becomes the evil one, very fun to mess around with ^_^

Oh yeah, that's probably one of the best things about the Playstation version as compared with the PC version. They should definitely have had them singing instead of just MIDI, at least they fixed that when Final Fantasy VIII came out for the PC with "Eyes On Me."

PC: Crappy graphics...
Although there seems to be some argument about that. Some say the graphics on the PC version are better and that's why you can actually see the characters' mouths.

BTW, having played through the entire game now on Playstation, I can say for sure: Cid is way more of a pottymouth in the Playstation version than he is in the PC. They censored him big-time in the PC version.

Actually, They could have had mouths on the PS version, bu Square didn't add them... but yes, the PS does have better graphics, the PC version graphics are blurry, more cascaded (notice in the moviesyou can see small blocks), and all around have a LOWER resolution then the PS... on a 16" monitor, the PC graphics are blurry... PS, I have a 56" big screen, perfectly clear and smooth O_o
