I'm looking for some truly epic anime soundtracks. Does anybody have a good stand out or personal favorite they'd recommend?

Epic is such a relative term. But, I can supply you with a short list of my favorite anime soundtracks in the hopes that you enjoy them.

Ghost in the Shell Original Soundtrack (parts 1-4)
Gunslinger Girl OST
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Original Soundtrack (and Vol.2)
Kimi go Nozomu Eien OST (1 and 2)

Death Note and Claymore have excellent soundtracks.

to be more specific, I'm referring to epic in the sort of big, sweeping orchestral soundtrack sort of way.

Gundam Unicorn has some really nice tracks.

Tales from Earthsea is as epic as it gets.

i think the soundtrack of karas is pure epicness!
