The last book I've read was the Barsoom Series, by Edgar Rice Burroughs. If you aren't familiar with him, he created Tarzan, the well known Jungle dude. Ironically, in both series the main character's name was John. It's a very enjoyable read but can get kind of redundant in theme. The thing I hated most though was that it was stuffed with Colonialism and was basically the start of what I call "The Last Samurai Syndrome". It's a good series, really, and I recommend for anyone liking the classic swashbuckling, get the girl and save the planet type stories. It could be likened to space operas, though the Mars Civ at that time was in decline, the planet dying. Anyway, READ IT!

I really want to do it. I need to increase my reading. I was unable to read that one book Mina wanted to talk about over winter break and she hasn't been on anyway so maybe this can fix taht a little.

For the reading challenge, you'd challenge yourself to read a certain number of books over the course of the year. Just a fun way to motivate yourself to read more. I brought it up in this thread a while back, but forgot about it and didn't think to check for interest when the timing for the thread would've been a little better.

What a dire, dire book. I don't mean in terms of writing quality, just in terms of tone. The first story is about murder, the second is about rape, the third is about selling one's soul (metaphorically) for happiness, and while I'm still not quite sure what the fourth one's about, I'd say the core theme is not really knowing the people you love.
King is known for writing some dark stuff, but this collection really takes the cake. Just After Sunset wasn't even this drab.

Fun read. Threre's a bunch of stuff that got changed like when plot points occurred and what order they visited the worlds in. I'm not all that crazy about the art style, the character designs don't look anywhere near as good as the anime's plus the facial expressions aren't as diverse or over the top as the show's.
There's a lot more naked breasts in the manga than the anime.

Absolutely loved this comment:
LACoincidental said...
Field, first let me say - there are no words for the things that woman suffered. No words, its just digusting.
On to Stringer Bell in a Viking helmet. Now, let me say that I am a big time comic book geek. I can literally break down the philosophical difference between the Golden Age and the Silver Age Green Lantern and influence of New Age thought on the Silver Surfer. Super-duper Nerd.
So I can say with great authority:
1. The comic is vastly different from Norse Mythology. In Norse Mythology - Balder, not Thor was the big bad boy on the Block. Stan Lee picked Thor over boulder because smacking aliens and monsters with a hammer made Thor less of a Superman rip-off than the Lord of Light.
Throughout history, Marvel take lots of liberties with the mythology. Hell, in the comics Thor's technically half Greek. (His mother is Gaea.) Also, Thor ended the Ragnarok
cycle. How you stave off the imminent threat of death is truly comic book stuff.
Hell Marvel made Samuel Jackson Nick Fury in the Ultimate Marvel line because the writer just thought Jules Winnfield was damn cool. Iron Man was Black for a hot minute, as was Superman, Captain America and the Green Lantern. Nothing unusual here.
2. Heimdall, in terms of mythology and the comic is a really minor character. I'm talking you have to squint to find him in a comic book. Volstagg is more popular (we love drunken fat people with superpowers.) Heimdall's powers are super-strength and uber-hyper senses, particularly eyesight and hearing. He can literally see things coming from hundreds of miles away. Heimdall's job is to stand guard at the gates of Asgard and ward off any invaders. He's the first line of defense. He's essentially the doorman/marine guard. Again, its not like they got Louis Gossett Jr. as Odin or Terrance Stamp as Loki.
All and all, much ado about nothing. Its race baiting gates losing their cookies over a minor issue. I remember how the message boards in 2000 were a twitter because the Black Green Lantern - John Stewart was selected for the Justice League cartoon. A bunch of losers whining about fictional characters -- a minor ones at that.
I've been a fanboy since I was 5, and I admit that this crap doesn't matter and these white people need to get a life.

Just finished Ron Rash's short story collection Burning Bright. There are several other novels by that name and a 2010 movie--none of which are related.
Rash's stories are mostly set around South Carolina, some during Civil War times, some in modern times. It goes back and forth between depraved rural chicken thieves and depraved rural meth addicts. The stories are well written, but usually end with the hope that you'll be shocked at how nonchalant the characters are about their actions. There's little to relate to or feel sympathetic about because of that. Worth reading, but not great.

Star Trek Mirror Universe - Glass Empires: "The Worst of Both Worlds." Good stuff, though confusing because they let things get mixed up with the Star Trek mirror universe novels and so you've got completely different canons within the Mirror Universe stories - this one, in which Captain Picard is working as an archaeologist for the Cardassians and the Stargazer is still his ship, and others in which he's still on some version of the Enterprise.

Mass Effect Retribution by Drew Karpyshyn. Pretty good read, showing how far the Illusive Man will go achieve his agenda. Reuniting David Anderson with Kahlee Sanders (who was in Revelation with Anderson and in Ascension) was a good move and showed a bit more depth into their 'what might of been' relationship. I 'think' this is set after Mass Effect 2, which if it is, does lay down what could be canon in Mass Effect 3. If you like the Mass Effect games and comics, I recommend the Mass Effect novels (Revelation (set a few years prior to the first game), Ascension (set a few months prior to the start of Mass Effect 2) and Retribution (set after Mass Effect 2 imo)) as they do add more depth to the games.

I read The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner.
By scheming and theft, the Thief of Eddis has become King of Attolia. Eugenides (yoo-JEN-ə-deez) wanted the queen, not the crown, but he finds himself trapped in a web of his own making.
Then he drags a naive young guard into the center of the political maelstrom. Poor Costis knows he is the victim of the king's caprice, but his contempt for Eugenides slowly turns to grudging respect. Though struggling against his fate, the newly crowned king is much more than he appears. Soon the corrupt Attolian court will learn that its subtle and dangerous intrigue is no match for Eugenides.

It is, most unfortunately. I'm taking a 20th century American fiction class now and naturally the theme we touch upon (once again) is modernism. It is really interesting relating back and forth between the class I took last semester (which happened to be 20th century British fiction).
Aside from it being a requirement though, there are plenty of books that I read knowing that I won't enjoy them. I do so, in order to just have the ability to talk about them. Haha.

It's philosophy, by Friedrich Nietzsche (German, 1844-1900.) As for whether or not it's a good book, well, I've found it interesting reading so far, but I suppose it depends on one's personal taste. As far as philosophy goes, it's certainly some of the most unusual you'll ever find, in terms of presentation. As the title suggests, it is not (for the most part) presented as a narrative, nor as a scholarly text or poetry, but rather as a series of speeches, filled with aphorisms. It is famous for Zarathustra's declaration that "God is dead," though this only begins to scratch the surface. Wikipedia can, of course, give you more details on Nietzsche, as well as about Thus Spoke Zarathustra itself. A bit of trivia - Thus Spoke Zarathustra served as the inspiration for Richard Strauss's tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra, which became known as the theme of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Oh, and of course, like any such work that is translated from another language, I suppose what you get out of it is in part based on which translation you read, assuming, of course, that you aren't able to read it in the original language. The one that I've been reading is the 2005 edition, with a translation by Graham Parkes.
P.S.: sorei - what did you think of Exodus? I don't think I've read any of the "Vulcan's Soul" books yet. As for Star Trek, I've been reading Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Lost Era: The Buried Age, but I haven't finished it yet.

Uzumaki vol. 3.
This was really good. While it was kinda ridiculous at times it didn't really matter what with the tone and imagery being so disturbing. Junji Ito's artwork is both beautiful and creepy. Only real problem is the fact that there's a bonus story at the end. Why the hell put it there when there's no more threat or mystery left because the story is all done and the fate of pretty much every character has already been reviled? Couldn't have been for space because they had space for it in the back anyway.

Started a Greek Mythology book. But the thing is while it looks like a very good book (in 2 volumes no less) it keeps interrupting itself with the author's theories and beliefs on how the myths were formed and what they "truly" mean. Often instead of explaining they just send you to a later part of the book and this pisses me off. I just wanted something that would tell me all the stories.

I liked it. It chronicles film/tv based off the stories of Lovecraft, most of them sub-par of course but there's also an art section and interviews. I've been watching a lot of "Lovecraftian Cinema" lately because of it. There's especially a lot of bts info on Re-Animator. The Revenge of the Radioactive Lady by Elizabeth Stuckey-French
It's about a woman who, without her knowledge, was given a vitamin drink containing radioisotopes as part of a government study in the 60s (which is based off a real study that happened). In present day, she's hunting down the doctor who did it and becomes entangled with his family, including his grandson, who has Asperger's and is building a nuclear breeder reactor in his backyard shed.
The premise is interesting, as is the research that went into it. But despite containing rape, incest, murder, children with cancer, nuclear fallout, and old people sex, the book is lighthearted Jennifer Weiner beach reading, which was not what I was looking for at all. However, it might be fun for someone else who's looking for a quick read.

Where I work sells quite a bit of Jennifer Weiner books. Is any of it worth picking up?

Don't know. I'm familiar with the name and the reputation (especially from when she and Kurt Vonnegut butted heads), but I haven't read any of her books. She supposedly only writes by-the-numbers chick lit.

Vonnegut I'm familiar with. I have an appreciation for his work. Can't for the life of me get why a "chick lit" author would get into it with Kurt Vonnegut, who's body of work is very much divorced from that genre.

It started at a lit conference (where tempers always seem to get out of hand :-\) when an audience member asked the panel of authors what message they wanted to get across in their work. Weiner said, very irritated, that she didn't know she was responsible for delivering a message to humanity. Vonnegut responded, "Then leave."
He was near death at that point, and fit the grumpy old man stereotype. But still. She not only antagonized the audience, but also whiffed on a softball question that could have gotten more readers interested in her work. What author, even a chick lit author, can't at least BS an answer about one of their themes?
They kept at each other for the rest of the conference, which is chronicled in Steve Almond's book Not That You Asked.

And in my opinion, that is a sign of a terrible artist.

As it has an (anti) endorsement by Stephenie Meyer, I watch its angst levels like a hawk.

Just read through a lot of info from soldier reports on weaponrey and enemies in Afghanistan. Seems like the news makes it sound worse. Even though the US has been there for nearly 10 years, the comparisons between this war and Vietnam are just plain false.

You can't even compare. The only thing comparable is, imho, the first agfhanistan war, between the Soviets and the Mudjahidins.
If you want my opinion, the US attacked the wrong country. they should have dealt with Pakistan first, as it is the rear base of these talibans A-holes. then Enter Afghanistan and deal with the remaining idiots.

Thing is most taliban these days are mostly pakistani, arab, and chechen. Most are just untrained brainwashed young people sent to the slaughter in suicide squads. Others, such as the Chechens, are trained by Al Qaeda and others and are pros at this shit. Yeah the Afghan-Soviet War was like Vietnam, Soviets seem to have the advantage then Mujahadeen start using new hit and run tactics and get foreign aid and bigger country has a long, painful, humiliating war. Just like in American Nam vets, I hear that the returning soviet soldiers were shunned due to what happened over there.
