The other thing I need to mention is that, for whatever reason that I don't know, Deutsche Grammophon only mastered the two SACD layers (stereo and surround) at 44.1 kHz instead of the much more common 96 kHz...

I would venture a guess that the original digital recording from 1994 was made at that resolution 44.1kHz. It's no loss to humans. :)

I would venture a guess that the original digital recording from 1994 was made at that resolution 44.1kHz.That's doubtful, considering that old analogue recordings from as far back as Karajan's 1975 Mozart Requiem have masters that make it possible for new SACDs of those recordings to be issued at 96 kHz/24-bit.

Here's the sampling info from that Mozart Requiem recording:

DG couldn't issue this Mozart SACD at 96/24 unless the original masters have high enough sampling rates to support it. If they lied about it, somebody out there would surely discover it, and DG's worldwide reputation would be destroyed immediately.

Why would a recording made ca. 20 years later (Gardiner's Planets) have digital session masters at a more primitive sampling rate? That would be pretty steep technology regression on DG's part.

(It's possible that 96 kHz/24-bit recordings might go back even further than 1975, but I don't have documentary proof of it. If anybody else here can enlighten me about 96/24 going back even further than 1975, it would certainly be welcome. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42753709/Photobucket/nod.gif )

Digital recordings are not analogue recordings.

Analogue recordings - such as the Karajan Requiem you mentioned, weren't made at any sample rate because they're analogue recordings - they can, however, be digitised at any sample rate and bit depth provided the original analogue masters survive. A recording that was made digitally, at a particular sample rate and bit depth, cannot have those missing bits recreated out of thin air.

96/24 recording became commonplace in the late 90s. In 1994, when this recording was made, it is entirely plausible (and legitimate) that the master was made at 44.1/16 or thereabouts. That was the "stage of average" at the time, in terms of digital recording.

I've always enjoyed it - I think Gardiner is underrated outside of his superstar period performances. As far as The Planets go, Boult's last recording with the LPO reigns supreme, for me at least.

The real star of the show is the Grainger... another composer massively underrated and frequently dismissed as "The English Country Garden guy"...

Thanks for this great share! I havent heard this version in any format yet and after your review Im quite curious. So far my favourite audiophile version has been the DVD-A of Previn's recording with the LSO (always loved this recording even on CD). The DVD includes an amazing sounding 24bit/96kHz Stereo-PCM track which is really worth to listen to and a major improvement over the CD. Do you know it? If interested I could rip and share it.
Thanks again!
