The revival of composer Vincent Youman’s earlier Broadway hit, “No, No, Nanette” was subtitled as “The New 1925 Musical” when it premiered at the 46th Street Theatre on January 19, 1971. The original book by Otto Harbach and Frank Mandel was freely adapted by director Burt Shevelove (Tony nominee) while the production was supervised by the legendary Busby Berkeley and featured a triumphant return to the musical stage by one of the icons of 1930s film musicals, Ruby Keeler. The excellent cast also included Jack Gilford, Patsy Kelly (Tony winner), Helen Gallagher (Tony winner), Bobby Van (Tony nominated) and Susan Watson as Nanette. The show also won Tonys for Best Costume Design & Choreography. “No, No, Nanette” was a big hit with audiences and ran for over 850 performances. An Original Cast Recording was released by CBS Masterworks in two versions, a conventionally mixed stereo LP and a quadraphonic LP mix in CBS’ SQ matrix process. The stereo version was later released twice on CD with the more recent one including outtake musical numbers not on the original LP releases. A few years ago I made my own quadraphonic remix of “No, No, Nanette” from a multi track reel to reel tape I acquired in the 1990s which fortunately included the outtake tracks that appeared on the 1999 CD release. Instead of the now obsolete SQ matrix, I decided to encode my new remix in the Dolby Pro Logic IIx music matrix, which is available on the majority of audio video preamps and receivers in use today. This is the same technique I used on my previous remix of the Larry Kert Cast Album of Sondheim’s “Company” and the "Funny Girl" soundtrack. As with the previous remixes the sound perspective is very different from the 1970s SQ quad with the gimmicky rear channels now used for ambience and the addition of a center channel. You will either like it or hate it, depending on your listening preferences. The remix sounds equally great in Stereo and particularly sounds wonderful through headphones. The Cast Album from “No, No, Nanette” is simply delightful and I hope you enjoy it in this new surround version.
