THE MOON IS BLUE, Otto Preminger’s 1953 film version of F. Hugh Herbert’s 1951 play, also directed by Preminger, was the first mainstream Hollywood film to utter the words, “virgin”, “seduce” & “mistress”, and was banned in Boston and other American cities because it received a “Condemned Rating” from the Catholic Legion of Decency in its initial release. Considering what we see on movie & TV screens since the 1970s, THE MOON IS BLUE could probably be shown today to a kindergarten class without any complaints. The music for the film was composed by Herschel Burke Gilbert and was later recycled in several 1950s TV sitcoms. The soundtrack LP was released on Crown Records, a budget label usually sold in five & ten stores and pressed on acetone or recycled vinyl, which is a scientific way to say that the pressings were atrocious. Fortunately the LPs sold in legitimate record stores were pressed on better vinyl and this remaster was done from one of those LPs, which still contained quite a bit of crackle but at least produced a reasonably listenable end result.
Included with this download is a remastered and much better sounding Roulette LP from 1958, MUSICAL THEMES – HOLLYWOOD U.S.A., with the Symphony of the Air (formerly the NBC Symphony Orchestra) conducted by composer Jack Shaindlin in his arrangements of 11 film themes, including a rare recording of his own theme from “CINEMIRACLE HOLIDAY”. Shaindlin’s arrangements are pleasant and respectful and I think you will find that this is a rather exceptional collection.
