I think it can be a nuisance or a good help for the music, it really depends if that was the intention of the makers of the product, whatever it is. If it was imposed, forced, to a media that doesn't need it, it can sound really annoying and horrible (ex. Pok�mon XY and Z). But, if the composer is creative.. and the director's intention is to use the music, like, it's some sort homage to original cartoons..

An example of wonderful mickeymousing is the work for Animaniacs and Tiny Toons. It really depends of how it's used. And if it fits the material.

Sorry, but I think that may be a vital part of what General Discussion is. Sometimes I don't feel like posting anything else than an iTunes screenshot because no one else is really posting anything either. Sometimes I'm just legitimately busy and such is all I have time to output. Posting iTunes screenshots requires nothing more than copy/pasting the image url, and for some (Such as myself and gururu), typing the film/video game/album title along with it's respective year and composer. Maybe we should each make an effort every once and awhile to spark a conversation of worth.

Reading comments on Facebook about the Skyrim Remaster.

I don't see why it really needed a remaster. For PC.
Maybe it's meant to be a console-only port/remaster?

But reviews say it looks slightly better than vanilla Skyrim.
but original Skyrim with mods looks even better.

Minor issues with existing mods, as they need to be refitted/recoded for Remastered Skyrim.
Saves are null. But what's the harm in creating a new character?

I haven't installed it yet.
I might not. It's free to me since I bought GOTY on Steam when it was dirt cheap.

I'd rather wait to see the full changelog to see if any bugs were fixed and if they're critical.
Sometimes updates don't do anything useful and you can still play the game without them.

The Covenant poster is an homage to the original Alien one sheet featuring the egg. (You can go on YouTube and find the original trailer to Alien. Still works.)

Sounds like someone took both channels, separated them, moved the right channel 0.03 seconds behind the left one (why?) downmixed to mono, duplicated the track, made the first one left and second one right and made the right channel louder to give the illusion of stereo.... why....

Sorry about that. If that had been true I'd have had a heart attack. The man makes movies like no one else. Even his less than successful films are often more interesting than other director's successful ones.

His film Alien & Blade Runner are for me what Star Wars or Raiders are to others. Those two films, BR in particular, baked my noodle but good.

Something tells me Universal isn't happy with what the director DeBlois wanted to do with HTTYD3 and make an epic, sad closure, and has obligated them to make a open end to make way for more sequels in the future.. fuck Hollywood.

The more time they have to make it, the better it will be. The first HTTYD came out in 2010, and the second, not until 2014. I am happy that, should they have until 2019, that it will be handled effectively and well, and that the script can go through many iterations. two years is just not enough. I am glad it is 2019, not 2016.

He's always talked about over at the HydrogenAudio forums.

Vinyl has purely aesthetic qualities rather than technical qualities.
It's all psychological and placebo tendancies.
It will sound different because it's a completely different and variable medium.
It can't be any better than the studio master. Uncompressed (Dnyamic Range) studio master.

All lossy codecs FROM TODAY are designed better than ones when Neil Young first used MP3.

You can look at the most recent developments for LAME MP3, it's still being heavily worked as we speak.

There's bound to be a new release soon.

I actually read (okay, skimmed) the study and the compression was not your normal 256/192/128 compression. It went all the way down to 112, 52, and 32.
Furthermore they never clarified what these MP3s were sourced from. They merely referred to "original" audio. Was it lossless? Was it 320k MP3? No mention as far as I could tell, and the source makes a big difference in how the transcodes sound.

And vinyl geeks have nothing to sing praises about, as there is no equivalency between iTunes and vinyl sound. In part because of the Loudness War.
Hell, the study doesn't mention vinyl at all. That's not what it was about.

Either way, VBR master-race for the win.

I can sing a million praises about all the different kinds of vinyl I've collected over the years. Probably something to do with it being a physical form that you can do things to and with. And most (not all) vinyls today include an MP3 download.

I'd rather go to the theater and see it on a truly big screen but for some folks $50 might be reasonable, especially if it's a family and they then load up with concession food. (A habit I will never understand. Are German theater goers as avid consumers of mock food as Americans?)

Also it's seen as a bulwark against piracy. Plus movie theater attendance is stagnant. (My suggestion: make better movies! Honestly, cable has better story telling than most films.)

Kindaaaaa makes Sense for bigger viewing Parties, but then they sure are leaving a big Group of Customers by the Wayside,
socially inept People and general Loners, etc.

I got 2 free tickets on my SCENE card for the Cineplex Odeon theaters, valid for any SilverCity in participating municipalities.

I've had them for about a yaer and a half and I really don't feel like going out to see any movie.
When it comes to the DC movies, I'd rather wait for the extended release at home.

To this day, I've not watched the Theatrical cuts to neither Dawn of Justice nor Suicide Squad.

Marvel will always be the same. They never do extended cuts.
But I can live without seeing them in theater.
We no longer have a real IMAX theater here, anyway so it's all moot.

We have an IMAX theater that can only do 1.78:1 aspect ratio.
So it's like watching The Dark Knight on bluray with the aspect ratio switching.
Exact same cropping and framing for the IMAX scenes.

Don't get me wrong, it's great for it's inhouse post-processing technology.
Their DMR technology definitely enchances the picture quality as well as the 3D quality.
The nearest SilverCity cinema to me just pales in comparison now that I watched IMAX DMR.

Only problem is that the small-scale IMAX theater is too far away to actually make an effort to go out there.

I'll see if a friend wants to go see Rogue One when it comes out.

No more 1.43:1 for me.

Back in the day when my Mom and I went to the movies we couldn't afford tickets and snacks. Plus since theater snacks had zero food value we didn't eat them. Same way soft drinks were verboten in our house. (Had my first Coke when I was 15. Ugh. Never again.) She'd make sandwiches and put them in her purse.

Yeah, it used to be you'd go to the movies to get quality story telling now so many movies are about the wide screen spectacle. (Actually, this is nothing new. When TV took off in the 50's theater attendance dropped drastically. That's how widescreen and 3-D came about. An attempt to lure people back to the movies.)

Studios still make high quality films like Arrival or Nocturnal Animals but bringing the boom brings in the bucks. Personally, I don't mind a film that's big, loud and fun but I draw the line at big, loud and dumb.

Like most of this year's tentpole films.

After reading a series of articles, mostly speculation mind you, my own silly wild ass guess is some lines - like "I rebel" - and some scenes - Stormtroopers wading through knee high water - played better in a Skywalker Star Wars film than a stand alone film. (Also having edited video for much of my career I know you shoot footage with every intention of using it only to find out later you don't need it or it doesn't work in the context of the final product.)

Edwards said he wanted to make a war film, emphasizing the war in Star Wars. That means a more serious tone and some of that dialogue doesn't match that seriousness.

True, and Abrams acknowledged that. But he and Disney had to reboot the franchise after the lackluster prequels and introduce Star Wars to a new audience and also get the current fans back into the theaters. So they went with a storyline that worked.

Do I wish they'd been more inventive? Yes. But they also made a film that, IMHO, recaptured the spirit of the original three films. Also, TFA's success led to Rogue One, a film which ended more like Empire than New Hope and other spin offs. Like the Han Solo standalone film.

Hopefully, with episode VIII the script will get more creative.

Yeah. As much as I can't stand TFA for copy-and-pasting most of its story and character, I'm paralyzed by being able to see both sides of the issue. If I were a Disney exec I'd probably have made the same decisions.

Yeah. And not just the director, the studio at large when it comes to a cash cow like this doesn't like fresh ideas.
I've never heard or seen Jurassic Park III but I'm guessing Don Davis worked his ass off to get that Williams sound for the picture. Even if Gia is too busy or whatever to return for JW, the new guy would emulate whatever he did for the first.

Meh, I just thought Fernando Vel�zquez would bring in a new fresh feeling to the movie, with a different kind of music. What makes you think Fernando couldn't do a bombastic action filled orchestra? What makes a composer great is the ability to expand to all genres. And I think this dude is good enough. He does have a classical sense with his music. I love his works with Zipi y Zape, very magical, classical and reminiscing of the 80s classics. Honestly everybody tries to emulate, and copypaste John Williams.. everyone can't be John Williams, nor need to be. To make a great score, you only need to understand classical music, and how a score works for a movie. You need to make music that ties in to the events in the movie but also outside of the movie.. it's not hard; but most composer nowadays don't seem to get the picture.

Unfortunately, in a world of temp tracks and synth pads being the standard for blockbusters, having an understanding of samples is more pressing than knowing how to get the audience's attention with sweeping melodies or memorable motifs. Writing complex music means you risk alienating the lowest common denominator.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, they just don't seem to place as much importance on it anymore. I was talking about this in my paragraph(s) about God of Egypt's score... now it's as if they only let the film score serve its most basic purpose of generating an underscore or atmosphere and essentially supporting a narrative, and not allow them to be as thematic, complex, interesting or unique as they once were...like, I think that too often a lot of directors may squash potential creativity an individual score or its composer can have, if only they'd let them work to the extent their actual capabilities allow.

Civil War had a good opening twenty mins, but then I honestly can't remember what the movie was about. It's interesting the Russos have a background in comedy because it's really missing in these otherwise well-made pictures and very, very missed. I really hope this bleakness doesn't extend into their two Avengers pictures because what made that first Avengers work was the light as well as shade and I'll be sad if that's all lost like it was in this picture.


I love the irony here. His crappy Civil War comic series started off with a nuclear bomb going off at a crowded preschool - and he bitches about "bleakness" pervading the lives of the Avengers.

Thank God the film takes nothing from his awful comic book but the name!

Which is why whenever someone complains about the state of politics I ask, "did you vote?" Most times the answer is "no" to which I respond, "shut up, you get the government you didn't bother to vote for."

Usually the justification for not voting is "it's too difficult, too time consuming, too boring." (How is helping determine the direction of the country boring?)

And yet these same people can give me chapter and verse about their favorite sports team, favorite TV program or recite the latest gossip on Twitter. Don't allow entertainment to distract from the real issues of the day.

Then you still elect evil. Not voting is voting. Your vote cancels out the individual who voted for the worst candidate on the ticket. Not voting leads to elections in which only the evil of two lessors run because then only the most venal, power hungry or corrupt individuals participate.

So don't be so effete or elitist. You can't afford it. Politics has been, is and always will be a dirty affair. So get over yourself and do your civic duty and vote. Vote for the candidate who will do the least amount of damage.

I don't vehemently hate Giacchino like some people, but I feel like so much more of his writing is fluff than is stuff of substance, or outside-of-film-listening merit.

Not every score is meant to be a genre-shaking knockout, but considering the sorts of films he's working on (and how much he's getting paid!) you'd think he'd put more work into developing more intelligent themes. That's what offended my ears more than anything in Rogue One: the pungent motifs. If it's crappy incidental music, then who cares? You only have to listen to it once and you likely won't consciously notice it anyway. But suffering through Jyn Erso's theme a dozen times in two hours is just too much to ask of a viewer.

For Spider-Man, I'm hoping he uses his apparent gift for writing sonorous strings (at least to my ears) extensively to offset his heinous SW transgression.
