In the early 1950s the film industry faced stiff competition from the rapidly growing television medium and in an effort to retain the movie going audience new processes, which resulted in larger, wider screens with multi channel stereophonic soundtracks, were introduced to give moviegoers something impossible for television to offer. Many of the films produced were screen epics featuring casts of thousands (real people, not the phony CGI of today), many with religious themes and stories. Some of these films have stood the test of time and went on to become genuine classics still enjoyed by today’s audiences, films like Cecil B DeMille’s THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, BEN-HUR, EXODUS, SPARTACUS & EL CID. More often than not, these films featured superb film themes and scores that more than matched their epic status, provided by some the greatest composers of the 20th Century. The two albums in this download showcase some of the more famous of these themes. “David Rose Plays the Theme from The Bible and Other Great Screen Epics", issued on Capitol Records (ST 2627) in 1966 & “Inspired Themes from the Inspired Films”, played by Felix Slatkin & The Fantastic Strings, issued on Liberty Records (SLBY 1066) in 1962.
Both were transferred from fairly clean LPs into 24 bit digital and processed minimally to eliminate transients and correct balancing issues present on the LPs and that’s about it. The end result allows you to hear two long out of print albums like they would sound played on a fine audiophile turntable system. Several of the themes are repeated between the two albums but the arrangements are unique to each album. All in all I think you will find this program a very enjoyable listen.
Also, very special thanks should be extended to ScoreoPhonic for suggesting that I post these two albums.
