Soundtrack from the Newsreel - Welcome the Queen (1954)

conducted by Muir Mathieson

Arthur Bliss - Welcome the Queen March (1954)

The Welcome the Queen March was the fruit of his work as a Master of the Queen’s Musick,
a position he took very seriously. He wrote the march for the Path� newsreel for the return of the
young Queen Elizabeth from a Commonwealth tour in 1954.

Malcolm Arnold scored a number of sequences throughout the newsreel as well as Bliss' March
being used throughout for the more ceremonial scenes.I'm not sure wether it's Malcolm Arnold or
Muir Mathieson or both that's responsible for interpolating the Bliss March throughout the 45 minute film.


For this 13 minute selection I've cut out everything where the sound effects drown out the music,
then cut back most of the repeated use of the Bliss march apart from the opening and closing sections.
Then cut out a bit of Arnold that is repeated fanfares and sections where the soundtrack had deteriorated.
Finally what was left was stitched together with fades, mixes, herbs and spices into something at least
listenable I hope.

How many of us were weaned on the teat of Grainer's tunes trickling off the telly (too much coffee effusiveness again!)

Richard Rodney Bennett's score for this Doctor Who story has a number of elements reused for different scenes across the four episodes.

As was typical in these early Doctor Who's the music was written before recording the show to be used like library music and was piped
in live as the show was being recorded rather than dubbed in post production. It seem likely that the programme makers asked the composer
for different moods to be reused across the four episodes.

Richard Rodney Bennett's score for this Doctor Who story uses a small ensemble of a pair of flutes, piano (low end rumbles) harp & various
low and high percussion including Xylophone or, claves, triangle, timpani, congas, snare drum.


I think sounds of processed gongs are Brian Hodgson's stuff as well as the Tardis sound of course.The basic audio source Hodgson
used for the TARDIS effect was the sound of his house keys being scraped up and down along the strings of an old gutted piano, and played backwards.

Sorry to say it looks like your zippy links to 'the Doctor' and 'Gershwin' have expired.
When my free cloud space has been taken with Mega (which it will, as 50GB will not cover what I eventually want to upload) I'll need to be looking at other hosts, and if it looks like after 30days inactivity with each post kills it, I'll purposely be downloading each once, myself, within those 30 days just to keep the link going. That's assuming that that's why yours dead now, of course.
