FFVII is freakin great. It's no doubt one of my favorites, if not my favorite. But... Why?

Here's why FFVII just fooled me into loving it.

-Extremely overpowered characters (You know you like it. Don't deny it. Everyone loves to have that sense of Authority where you're super powerful and you kill everyone with ease. Take my Mastered KOR twice with MIME with my other two characters, and I can't even die because of Final Attack. oh yeah)
-Badass Badguy, Seph is just a natural badass. I mean have you ever seen a person so kickass? They hype him up like GOD. So, naturally you're like... Damn he's cool. He kills Aerith but, eh makes you hate him more. If you hate a bad guy, that means he's playing his role.
-Cool main char.. an EX-Soldier who's super strong! Another badass person who has a history with the villian.
-Black guy, OMG Barret is the only black guy in FF. I'm not black but Barret is cool haha. He'd always be like $*%*&#!!!, that's just funny.
-Playable Cid, now Cid was cool. He's a bit emotional and weird but that just makes you love him.
-Amazing system. Well, it's pretty ordinary now. But, back then it was great. I still haven't seen a system as great as Materia though.. The FFX system was great too, but Materia is just cooler.
-The girls.. Big breasted chick for the pervs. Goodygoody lovable church girl.. Smartass little girl who's after your materia. This plays a role none the less.

What didn't make this game so great..
-The world, amazing at the time. But, now that I've played FFX. The FF7 world could have been better. Better environment makes a better game.
-Storyline, the one thing I love about playing RPGs. It's the story of it. FFVII didn't have a great storyline like FFVI, FFII, FFX. But, everything else that was cool about it blinded me from this.

This game was great, to me it's the pinnacle of FF. Every FF game I play I have to compare to this. It sort of set the tone of how good any FF would come out to be. But, lately the games have not been able to reach this stature. FFX did it for me though, that game was great. But, I now realize. Square can't keep making their games like this.. If they did, then FF would be boring because it would be the same concept everytime, and I appreciate this. I've now come to realize that, the other games I've played are actually good. You can't compare these new games to this one, because now Square has to think of something completely new. I feel like a few more games like this would make me feel better, but not really.. Just my two cents.

Sephiroth had a good start indeed. It started with everyone talking about him as a hero and role model, so when you first meet him face to face you feel impressed.

However, Sephiroth doesn't do anything with this first impression. There's no character development at all (only in the flashback) and at the end he grows even more boring... I mean, he does not talk at the end. Not one word. He's just the guy standing there and looking cool. The guy you gotta knock over. No sense of drama, that guy. And it started out so well with some memorable scenes... but no!
Kuja is better in this aspect. Contrary to Sephiroth he grows more interesting as the game progresses. And he has some in-game-development. Something Sephiroth can only dream of.
No... noo... Sephiroth isn't that great.

And Barret isn't the only black guy in Final Fantasy. Maybe the first, but not the only one. Keep your eyes open.

And you list Tifa's big breast and her outfit as a pro... Well, whatever. Maybe I'm just angry because I've read too often that the girls in FFx-2 wear too little clothes... So it's alright in FFVII, but totally sucks in FFX-2? *cries*

Forget everything except my complaint about Sephiroth.

The storyline and just the game system, made this game great. Sephiroth is overrated. Sure he's cool, but hardly evil and effective.

Kefka, Sin, Kuja all tons of better because of certain actions, certain conspiracies and certain secrets which made them more interesting. Kefka just passes every villian with 10 miles or so thanks to his geniusous, but that's besides the point ^.^

I guess the game is so great; since of the story, the characters and especially Cloud, Tifa + Aeris and just how it played ^^;

The whole game is overrated. I prefer FF8.

I think a lot of people say FF7 is their favourite because so many other people do.

Nobady will ever convince me that FF7 is the best FF ever. It's just not.

Well, I know for sure that I don't say FFVII is the best just because everyone else does. It was my first FF and so I do admit I hold a certain bias. But I just enjoyed the storyline, the battles and the music more than any of the other games. So that's why it's my favorite.

Give Sephiroth a break with character development, he's dead :p :D

I thought 8 was more realistic, but i didnt get as emotionally involved as in 7. 7 was the revolution for the final fantasys.

*edit most emotional best involving music in this game also, simply best soundtrack to a game ever, also a good balance of humor and sadness and hate and all the important things to get you emotionally hooked*

FF7 is definately one of my favorite games, it just has a great atmosphere to it that very few games can match. Is it the best in the FF series? No. But it is certainly better than every traditional FF that came after it (FFT being better and FFXI might be).

In some ways I hate what this game did in introducing fmv sequences to the ff games, every game after this seemed to be developed with one thing in mind, what kind of cool fmv sequences can we put in this game that would look great in the comercials.

Didn't find this place untill later...[>.<] THANKS MogKnight!! LOL
Well for the story line (as many people thought so and actually it is), I think all the FF games have nice story lines (that makes you want to play them and keep playing)=]
I think what makes it so special is it's kind new at that time and it formed a new system and the following FF series improved from it (or evolved? haha)
It was good because it was the FIRST, as rYaN said earlier, 7 was the revolution for the final fantasys

Just like FFX, it was a shock too, it's the first FF game on PS2, got new systems and pretty CGs. So yeah, that's what I thought.

There is not too much to do with the characters and storyline (Most of the FF characters and stories are good)

Do you realize that you just painted a big target on your back?

First, you revived a very old thread. That's a no-no.

Second, you bashed the FF games that came before when many people around here would tell you that FFVI was the best.

Anyway, a lot of people around here think FFVII sucked. And to say it sets standards for modern gaming is an awfully big stretch.

1. I consider gameplay over graphics when choosing a Final Fantasy game.

2. I do not consider the abiity systems before FFVII tobe 'wierd ass'

3. The graphics on FFVII werent superior even at that time.

FF7 is the best in my sense cause' it was my first Playstation game. (I only had a Sega Genesis before that) So to me the graphics were cool.

I'm not dissin' the other FF! (Cause I also have 8,9, and origins)

I just have played 7 more often, thats all.

It's only the 2nd RPG I've ever finished. Big improvement over Dragon Warrior IV on Nintendo!

The joys of advancing technology.

I would say that FFVII is an awesome game!! BUT I don't think its better than any of the other ones.(except for VIII I hated that game!) I believe that seven is a masterpiece(sp? god...) but so are VI and X in my eyes. But hey I'm also the person who thinks FFX-2 is incredibly awesome...

I just know it's great because I'm replaying it more often than the other Final Fantasies. FFIX was okay for moi, but FFVIII was just boring. Unfortunately, I can't play other FFs in PS2 coz' I can't find PAL DVDs here. :( Anybody knows how to make backup CDs???

I think most people get tricked into loving ff VII because it was such a gigantic step up from ff VI. The graphics, even though they're not great, are better than ffVI, and ffVII was the first one on ps. Also there's always that little thing that causes you to love a game because it''s the first one you've played. No doubt ffVII is a greeaaat game... it's actually my favorite for the reason above :D my first one, but the story line and the characters are so well developed. Also the variety of personalities given to the characters makes ffVII even better. I love final fantasy VIII also, Reeni, and IX as well... but i have to say that ffVII is my favorite of all.

Prak, if you hate final fantasy 7 so much why are you in this forum? Also, FF7 was a big step for gaming at the time.

It's so great because it's final fantasy VII! There's everything in that game... romance, horror, action, you name it! There's so much at the beginning of the game, (especially of you're a first time player), that you want to find the answers to... lke Why does Cloud have breakdowns and who is that voice that haunts him? It keeps your interest that way...

I love ffVII!!!!!

Not saying its the best game ever, because their are much better games, but Final Fantasy 7 is my favorite FF from the ones I have played.

The graphics never did bother me much. The story was the most intriguing and it did relate a lot to how the world is today. The depth of the characters stories ( Especially Vincents, Sephiroths, Tifa's and Cloud's). The game play could have been better (I found it way to easy) but besides that its well done.

Do I not have as much a right as anyone else to discuss it, whether I liked it or not?

Course you do. I dont like people who think just because you have a different opinion it doesnt count at all. Ive been encountered with that a lot..

like what? in my view FF7 is the best game. It has lasted me the longest that any other game and I would say that Metal Gear Solid on the PSOne comes second.

yeah there might be games with a more interesting/intuitive battle system but for me the sotry and characters were the greatest things in my life, but that was easy since it was the first major game i ever played, spyro doesnt count, but those were fun as hell as well. yeah sure everything could be improved, but thats what 7 years of experience and technological advancements does. the way everyones story tied in with every one and thing else, very addicting.
