Wow, this is beautiful. The higher bitrate allows me to hear things that I couldn't hear before with the upconverted 128kbps mp3 version.
I think that the sound mixing is far better on this release than it was on the soundtrack release- although I love both versions equally. The sound mixing is notable on "In Motion/Let the Hacking Begin".

You never got a hold of the 320kbps version Konio posted back in July? This one?

Unless that is it, I'm not very educated with the whole upconverted bitrate thing

Those files are the ones grabbed from the Sony site, only upconverted to 320kbps from the original 128kbps files. The difference in quality increase is noticeably better on this post' (even when I converted KaFaraqGatri's lossless files into 320kbps myself).

So I suppose I should do the same and convert this to 320 then?

Well transcoding (as its known) 128k to 320k will not increase quality AT ALL. On the contrary, it will decrease it. So a FLAC to 320k is clearly the winner :)
And Dak, VBR-0 is better than 320k ;)

Can you explain why VBR is better?
KaFaraqGatri

VBR-0 (also known as Extreme) gives you the best sound quality whilst reducing file size. Audio is split into frames and anlaysed for MP3 encoding. Depending on the spectral range or complexity of the incoming signal, not every frame will need 320 KB to reproduce the sound quality well. VBR allocates less KB to the less complex signals, and more KB to the more complex signals. Ergo, 320k is a waste of disk space.
Also, depending on the codec used (LAME being the best), VBR can give better frequency response than 320 CBR encoding. I have seen some 320k files with a cut off around 16khz but all my VBR-0 CD rips go right up to 20khz in some cases.
Thats a basic summary, anyway - someone correct me if I am wrong!

Not if you don't want to.
What I meant by the 320kbps conversion comment is that I converted KaFaraqGatri's FLAC to 320kbps MP3 ONLY to see if there was a notable difference in quality between those (new MP3) files and the files posted previously (in July), which claimed to be 320kbps- and there was. That means that the July post files were upconverted into 320, but weren't genuinely 320.
What I did with KaFaraqGatri's FLAC files is that I converted them into Apple Lossless so that I can play them on my iTunes/iPod without loss of quality.

I am well aware of that :) I ended up converting the FLAC files into ALAC (Apple Lossless) anyway, which I rarely do for albums because of the space size- but Trent & Atticus are an exception!
Hey, do you think that 256kbps MP3 VBR is better quality than 320kbps CBR MP3 or 256kbps AAC?
I've been debating whether I should convert my files to either 256VBR MP3 or 256CBR AAC...
KaFaraqGatri
03-05-2012, 06:20 PM
As I understand it, AAC is a newer and therefore better codec. iTunes Plus releases often look totally lossless in a spectral view.
I think 320kbps CBR MP3 is better than 256 VBR MP3, because the maximum bits a 256k VBR encode will give you is 256kb for one frame. VBR-0 extreme is the best option :) It will give 320kb to the more complex signals.

Can Foobar2000 do VBR-0?
KaFaraqGatri

No idea. The ONLY tool you need (and everyone here should have it) is dbPowerAmp Music Converter. It encodes and decodes pretty much every format and is highly customizable. Also rips CDs blindingly quick.

Can Foobar2000 do VBR-0?
Yes, but you may need to create a 'custom' option for it, "Parameters":
-S --noreplaygain -V 0 - %d
KaFaraqGatri

In dBowerAmp, I also set a -1db attenuation to avoid clipping (when encoding to MP3).

I prefer to not change anything db/ReplayGain~wise: if the original stream had clipping or was badly mastered/... the lossy encode shall have these things, too. I think it helps keeping a bit of fidelity to the source material.
KaFaraqGatri
03-06-2012, 05:53 PM
Adding a -1 attenuation isnt the same as ReplayGain. I do it because if the original audio is limited or normalized on the CD right up to 99% or 100%, encoding that to MP3 with introduce clipping that wasn't there in the original signal, whatever bitrate/encoding settings you use.

The reason why this score was legible for an Academy Award is because the two tracks Trent & Atticus remixed from the Ghosts I-IV album aren't a part of the score- they're technically remixed NIN songs Fincher used.
They're not on this promo score for that reason.

That's false. Having checked the OST and the FYC on Spek, all the tracks are lossless, seeing as there are no cut offs. It's just that the FYC is quieter in mastering, hence the slightly different frequencies.
