Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect to the chat?
You have 2 options to use to connect to the chat: You can either go to this address (http://www.ffshrine.com/chat/chat.html), filling in your chat nickname and entering the chat room from there, or you can use an IRC application such as mIRC. When using mIRC, connect to any server on the beyondirc network, and once connected join #ffs. When using the java applet on the site, this is automatically done for you. If you have any more questions regarding the mIRC program, please see their website: http://www.mirc.com. If you have any other questions about connecting to chat, feel free to post a request for help in the "FFS Help & Suggestions" forum of our message board.

What are the symbols next to the names, and what do they mean?
The symbols next to people's names in the chat represent certain powers those users have. If an "@" is next to their name it means that they are an operator and can kick/ban people from chat if someone is breaking the chat rules, and can also change the chat room topic that is displayed when people enter the room. If there is a "%" next to their name they can do basically the same thing except they cannot kick channel operators from the chat. I "+" next to a username is more of a display than anything else - it means that the person has been there for a long time and is a frequently active member of the chat.

What do I do if I get kicked/banned from chat unfairly?
If you feel that you have been kicked or banned from the chat without a good reason, please email evolution@ffshrine.com with a description of what happened and why you feel you were kicked/banned unjustly.

I want to connect to chat using mIRC, where do I get the software?
You can obtain the mIRC software from http://www.mirc.com.

Important Rules and Information

 Chat Rules
The following rules will be enforced in chat and can get you kicked out of the chat room and possibly permanently banned if you continually break them:

- No Flooding
Flooding is typing multiple lines and sending them into chat in a short period of time one after another. This is not allowed because it irritates chatters and some people do it on purpose to mess up the operations of the chat channel.

- No Excessive Swearing
We do allow some swearing in the chat, but excessive swearing can get you kicked and/or banned. Just avoid it as much as possible.

- No Explicit/Illegal/Highly Offensive Content
Explicit sexual content along with discussion of illegal materials may get you kicked and/or banned from chat for obvious reasons. Operators use their own judgement as to when to kick/ban someone based on how offensive they are. Discussion of illegal content is something that is not often enforced as we allow free discussion, but drug promotion, etc., in chat WILL get you banned.

- No Nicknames that Impersonate Operators, No Offensive or Explicit Nicknames
If you log in with the name of a channel operator or a name that is explicit or offensive, you are subject to being banned. The channel operators will warn you once, and if you refuse to change your name you will be kicked and/or banned.

- No Advertisement
Please do not come to the chat room to advertise your site or any type of product.

- Listen to the Operators
If a channel operator asks you to do something, please listen to them. If you are using a script that sets your typing to a special font but is hard to read, have an offensive nickname, etc., an operator will ask you to change it.

- No Non-FFS Bots Allowed
A bot in the chat room is a special program that is configured to do certain things like ask trivia questions to users, perform administrative functions, etc. Statsbot (sometimes called Shrinebot) is the only bot allowed in chat and is controlled by the FFShrine staff. If you have your own bot, please do not bring it to chat as you will be subject to being kicked and/or banned.

Follow these simple rules and you'll be just fine.

 Channel Operator Guidelines
The following is a short set of guidelines for channel operators:

- Kick/Ban Only if Chat Rules were Broken
Doing otherwise can and will make your operator rights dissapear and could even get you banned from chat.

- Use Common Sense
Use common sense when interpreting the chat rules. Don't ban someone for saying one swear word or saying a few things that are a bit edgy or offensive as far as the rules go. Only warn a user if you are READY to kick/ban them if they continue their behavior.

- Follow the Chat Rules!!!!
As an operator and a chat user you must follow the chat rules to set a good example.

- Oping/Voicing Users
Please do not op or voice users in chat, even if they come in under the correct nickname and/or hostmask - let chanserv do it. We've had problems with non-ops being oped this way in the past. Evolution will add new operators to the access list when they are to be added. Do NOT op any user unless specifically told to do so by Evolution.

- Idling Users
If a user idles for over 5 hours, kick them. This can be checked by doing a whois in mIRC.

- Changing the Chat Topic
The topic can usually be changed as often as wanted/needed. If it has important information about site downtime or a site announcement, or its text specifically asks that it not be changed, please don't change it.

Other than that, just have fun, chat, and make sure users aren't breaking the rules.

 Channel Operator List
A channel operator list will soon be found on the staff page of the main website.
